BAS Superstars

Many Better Air Schools create exemplary projects – with exceptional results!

2005-06 School Year Highlights

  • Students made more than 1,000 walking trips to school during the year through the Walk There!for Clean Air program.
  • Six schools showed a four percent increase or more in bus ridership, with Barnwell Elementary seeing an 11 percent increase overall. Lewis Elementary had one classroom increase by 22 percent during its fall Classroom Challenge!
  • It was also a great year for BAIR, the Better Air Bear, as he toured all Better Air Schools with his friends and foes to teach and entertain.
  • The anti-idling program also made great strides. We commend the 50 bus drivers at Atlanta Area School for the Deaf who committed to turn off their buses on school campus!
  • The students at Fulton Science Academy participated in hands-on activities as part of the air quality lesson plans, sponsored a raffle for parent drivers that turned off their engines and posted daily Smog Alerts.

We saw many schools and champions that exhibited an extraordinary commitment to the Better Air Schools program and we hope to see that from each school this year. We look forward to recognizing your school here soon!

Amana Academy is in its second school year, as well as its second year as a Better Air School. Becoming a Better Air School right from the start made getting involved easy, and was a natural decision due to Amana’s mission to enhance environmental responsibility.

Stonewall Tell Elementary encourages overall environmental excellence as a part of its mission statement. The school is having great success with the Better Air Schools program, particularly bus ridership.

Morningside Elementary is growing so fast it is “ripping at the seams,” according to bus committee volunteer Jason Brewster. Growth is typically a good thing, but it can also pose problems. Namely, Morningside no longer has the capacity in its car rider lines to support the school’s growing population. The solution? Get more students on the bus.

Fulton Science Academy (FSA) has been selected as the Superstar because of its overall approach to living up to the name “Better Air School.”
